Medical insurance cost

Welcome to our website, a clearinghouse for information about low cost medical insurance, individual health policies, and other general insurance inquiries. Insurance is an important part of planning for the future; each and every one of us must be prepared for whatever life throws our way. Just as every customer has different needs, every insurance policy is different. This is where you can learn more about which policies are best for you, and how to best insure yourself for the kind of life you want to live.

When you belong to an HMO, in order to keep medical insurance cost low, individual health care choices mean that your choice of specialists will be limited to a group of doctors to whom your primary care physician (PCP) provides referrals. Although you'll normally be referred to a specialist who can treat you satisfactorily, a problem may arise when you would prefer to see a particular specialist who is outside of your PCP's network. Generally, seeing a PCP outside of the network is not a good strategy if you’re goal is to keep medical insurance costs low. Still, if you have individual health insurance and you need to see a particular doctor, you may have no choice.

If you decide that you must see a specialist outside of your PCP's network, the key to keeping medical insurance cost low is to first ask your PCP for a referral. If your primary care physician is reluctant to provide a referral, explain to him or her exactly why you want to see that specialist, and how important you feel that specialist is to your particular individual health. If your PCP will not provide the referral, and you feel strongly about seeing the out-of-network specialist, you have two options:

  • Pay for the specialist's services out of pocket

  • Change to a primary care physician who will make the requested referral

If your PCP does make the referral, your HMO can still refuse to pay for your visit to the specialist, in this case doing what they can to keep medical insurance cost low. In this case, you should appeal directly to the HMO and explain why you wish to see that particular specialist. If you are persistent, you can sometimes get an HMO to pay for a service that was previously denied. If your appeal fails, you can pay for the specialist's services yourself or see a specialist whose services will be covered by your HMO. This final option gets you the coverage that you want, but frequently this avenue is an expensive one to take. In order to keep medical insurance cost low, individual health choices unfortunately must be made in conjunction with what your HMO decides.

You always can lower the cost of your insurance by shopping around. In fact, prices for the same coverage can vary greatly. In general, whether you’re looking for low cost medical insurance or individual health policies of any kind, a few hours of research could save you hundreds of dollars a year. If you think you’re ready to purchase a policy, double check and make sure you’re getting the most for your money. The last thing you want is a policy you could have purchased for less somewhere else.
